- You are what you eat so don't be a pie. Make sure you are getting enough protein and not overloading on the carbs and fats. We need a balance of all 3 but many of us reach for carbohydrates more often that we should - remember even fruit is a carbohydrate.
- Watch your alcohol quota. Yes, it can make us feel good in the short term, relaxing and letting us live it up. But it is a depressant drug, and as we all know has many health risks associated, even impacting on our nightly shut-eye quality. A couple of glasses of wine a night with the big jugs we drink out of these days is quickly 3 bottles a week Try to alternate water with alcoholic drinks.
- Dehydration is the enemy of glowing skin! Make sure you stay hydrated with plenty of water and fluids during summer.
- You guessed it, exercise. Not just from a physical perspective, but regular exercise is also great for your mental wellbeing, releasing feel-good endorphins.
- Zzzzzzzz Sleep. Physically it is the time when the body can renew its energy store, but sleep also helps us to rebuild our mental energy, maintaining normal levels of cognitive skills such as speech, memory, innovative and flexible thinking and also brain development! Ideal is around 7-8 hours. Often sleep can be disrupted through overheating, so make sure that you are warm when going to bed then have only enough covers to maintain your temperature so you don't overheat.
- Take a moment. There are 1440 minutes in a 24 hour period. Every once in a while just take a moment to stop, breath, and appreciate all the good things in life.
- You're not superwoman/man. Sorry. If you are feeling overloaded and not coping, ask for help. You don't need to be the person that can do everything - the reality is no-one else is noticing.
- 3 Good Things. Each day take note of 3 good things that happened. It may be a challenge some days but if you dig reaaalllly deep they will be there. Jot them down and when you are having a below average day, it is a good reminder that good things do happen to you.
- It's dangerous out there - protect yourself. As much as we LOVE the feeling of the sun, it is a killer. Make sure you put on your sunscreen with at least SPF15 every morning rain or shine, and if you are out in the sun keep topping up during the day. Avoid the hours of 11-2pm when sun is at its highest burn quota. And don't be stingy with the sunblock, make sure you apply a good coating.
- Perfection. Pretty tough to achieve. Be kind to yourself. Set realistic goals. Treasure the body you have even if it isn't perfect. It's going to take you to many places, experience many great things, look after it.
